Punctuation

As we discussed in class, punctuation is not simply a set of rules without purpose --- and its purposes go beyond annoying us. Good use of punctuation makes you a stronger writer, since you can express yourself with clarity, power, and creativity.

Give an example or two of how punctuation can change a sentence: a made-up one, a text message, or one you find.

  1. punctuation made a very big difference in this one text i got last winter. my mom texted me saying " I'm going home then lighting a fire to the hospital." she not only saved time by taking out some words but i understood that she was going to set the hospital on fire. that made a really big difference being that she meant she was going to put a fire in the fire place

  2. As we discussed in class punctuation can make a big difference in a sentence's meaning or purpose. One example is the one we used in class about your brother who said he was going to the store to get gas then coming over to your place. In ones mind that sentence without commas or punctuation could mean i am going to the store to get gas and then coming over to your house. But in another person's view of things it could mean going to the store then i am getting gas then i am coming over to your house. This could make a big difference if say you were planning a big dinner and expected someone to be there after they got gas. Instead of someone going to the store then getting gas then coming over to your house that could throw off the timing. That example is one of many examples of how sentence structure and punctuation is important to the meaning or purpose of a sentence.

  4. Like we discussed in class, Mr. Moccia got a text message from his brother and he took in a different way than intended. Like Ryan said, when Mr. Moccia's brother listed "the store to get gas and come to your place" it sounds like he was going to a gas store. Without the use of commas, the sentence was interpreted in a different way. Comma's or any other puncuation gives the sentence the meaning especially when listing anything. Every sentence has 2 sides to it, so it is important to use the correct puncuation so a reader does not take it in a harmful way. A sentence can also become confusing with out the correct punctuation. Especially in formal essays, it is important to watch puncuation to get points across.

  5. As we all discussed in class, the uses of puncuation are critical to make your sentance a hundered percent understandable. "going to get a birthday present at shoprite be back in two hours." I got this text and i was very confused. It is pretty strange how someone would go to get someone a birthday present from shoprite. What this person did is they forgot to use punctuation and it threw me off guard abd i couldn't understand it. Personally, I am lazy enough not to put commas, but I realized that I need to in order for what i am trying to say to be completely understandable and not confusing at all.

  6. Punctuation is important in any form of writing let it be text messages, emails, or even school work. This is important because it is grammatically correct, once a sentence is grammatically incorrect it is hard to understand and follow. For example I received a text message from my friend saying "be at your house soon need to go to Kings make bed and take a shower." This makes it seem like my friend is going to go to Kings and get changed and take a shower there, but really if he used commas it would clearly show that you are listing things to do. There could be many other cases of people listing things without commas and this might confuse the reader to some extent. Other sentences like "I am going to leave for church soon need to get dress make some food then buy a bible," show that is is crucial for a sentence with listing in it to involve commas.

  7. Punctuation is very important because it can alter the way the sentence implies something. Commas for instance, i think are the most common punctuation marks besides from periods. This is why you need to be able to use them in order to state something how you say it. If you put the comma in a different place and want it to be said someway else then it will throw the reader off and will read it differently. Also, if you don't even put a comma in where you are supposed to, then it can also confuse the reader. For example, "It's my turn to hit Steven", and then "It's my turn to hit, Steven." The first sentence without a comma implies that you are going to hit Steven. The second sentence with a comma shows that you're telling Steven it's your turn to hit.

  8. Punctuation seems like it is not very important, but it actually really can change the way someone is saying something. The other day my mom texted me saying, "im going to a&p getting my nails done and eat." I thought she was getting her nails done and eating in a&p. If she used commas it would have made more sense. Without punctuation it can sometimes be extremely important. In some situations someone can be trying to say something very important or that they are hurt. This is why punctuation is very important and when your older its important to make sure your punctuation is precise.

  9. Punctuation can really affect a sentence because without commas, ideas and thoughts can be mixed together. The purpose of a comma is to pause, to separate words and phrases. An example of the miss use of punctuation would be a text from a parent telling their child “I am going to go to the bank go to the store get gas and pick you up.” This statement could be misinterpreted because of the lack of commas. Read as received, it could mean that the sender is going to the bank and telling the receiver to go to the store and get gas. Using commas as in “I am going to go to the bank, go to the store, get gas and pick you up,” the reader can better understand that the sender is doing all of the actions. Readers can interpret writing differently, but the consequences of a misunderstanding can sometimes be severe. The example of a message regarding running errands and picking someone up may not be that important, but some writings can be very important. Doctors may be writing prescriptions or orders for patients, or soldiers may be communicating regarding battle plans. Punctuation is important.

  10. What’s the big deal, you failed to use or place a comma in the correct place in a sentence. It’s not like that tiny and insignificant missing or misplaced comma could have any real effect on the meaning of the sentence. It’s not like the missing or misplaced comma could result in the reader completely misinterpreting what was written, right? Wrong. Just look at the last sentence. Remove the comma, and the reader could get the idea that the sentence was indeed written right the first time. Punctuation can clearly change a sentence.

  11. punctuation dramatically effects a reader's understanding of a sentence. If you fail to use the place of a comma then the sentence could mean a whole other thing. Again with previous responses my dad texted me something that completely blew me away. However really he just missused his punctuation. This is what he said, "Alex, at house making dinner with kristina melissa and emma." however he really meant, "alex, at house, making dinner, with kristina, melissa, and emma (3 sisters)." My sisters never help to make dinner with my parents. I was surprised and came home to find out i miss interpreted the text.

  12. Punctuation makes a big difference in the meaning in the sentence. It allows the reader to understand exactly what you are trying to say, instead of interrupting it for something else One example I can think of was when I was watching a commercial and a man was smoking a cigarette next to a pregnant women and she said “Do you mind, I’m pregnant. But what the man took it as, was, she had said “Do you mind I’m pregnant?” So he replied “no not really it doesn’t bother me” and the lady got very offended.

  13. I have fallen victim to inproper punctuation in my texts and then people not knowing what I mean. For example, one might say, "Let's eat, Mommy" but if written without the comma it could be seen as "Let's eat Mommy" which of course, mean two completely different things.

  14. On facebook, my sister's status for thanksgiving was "EATING EVERYONE!" She was excited because she was finally eating (she lives in Japan so it was a day before us though) and she made the meal for her, another family, and her own family. I found her post humerus because it sounded like she was eating everyone in her family, when really, if she added a simple comma it would have made sense and she would have been, "Eating, everyone!" I commented on it and I said "...it would be a little better if you added a comma." She later on realized it and it made sense to most people. Punctuation is very important because it COULD make you sound like a cannibal, or something else strange. :D
