Responsibility and Knowledge

When we discussed plagiarism, we discussed the fact that we can be responsible for knowledge we don’t have. For example, we are responsible for knowing the speed limit; and we’re responsible for understanding what plagiarism is – these responsibilities are now realities, independent of whether or not we know the speed limit or the rules of plagiarism.

What are some other things we are responsible to know, independent of whether we know them or not?

  1. Some things we are required to know regardless of whether we already know them or not are simple things like red means stop and green means go. Also personal responsibilities such as cleaning up after yourself or making money. We must know these things using our most basic knowledge or else they become realities that can cause problems for someone that does not know them. For example if you are driving and you come to a stop light that is red and you have no idea what that means, you could just drive through and get into an accident. But everyone else knows those types of things so you would look just plain dumb. There are even much large scale things that we need to know like laws or else would could end up breaking them without even knowing we did anything wrong. For example if someone walked into a store and saw money in the register and decided they would take it. Without knowing that there is anything wrong with that then they could end up in very serious trouble. This is the exact same thing as the example of plagiarism in different context.

  2. As we grow up we have to adapt to things that we have to start to know without correction. Somethings would include laws, without laws this nation wouldn't be what it is today, this also goes for the people following the laws. But, the people following the laws didn't have all the laws written down for them, so when faced in a situation where you may wonder if it is OK steal they didn't look at the laws, they knew them. These laws are now common sense to almost everyone who's parents taught them what is right and what is wrong. Besides laws there are also topics that people usually recognize as a common responsibility not to bring up, for example usually people steer away from conversing about the topic of income. Other things that are responsibility to know is your future, usually after college the graduate has to start to take over the responsibilities that their parents did for them when they were kids. For example, parents put food on the table for your self but once you leave your parents house you are on your own, no one to cook you food or to wash your cloths, this all depends on you now. All in all the this that you usually recognize as basic knowledge is our responsibilities for the mean time until we move out.

  3. as we get older, we take on more and more responsibilities. we have daily routines that we must follow for society such as getting up and going to school everyday, we have to know when to wake up so we're on time for school. in school we're required to pay attention and learn so we can do better and achieve greater things. in elementary school you had to learn your times tables because the teacher always said you'd need them in the future and it's the building blocks like knowing basic math that help you achieve. from those basic times tables you go off to high school, and college, and then on your own to start a new life where it's all about you. your required to make your own money, and provide for yourself now without your parents always being there. now it may have taken some practice for you to know your times tables but you eventually understood you need to know them or else you couldn't grow and learn. if you don't understand the concept of plagiarism your going to lead yourself into a mess of trouble that may sometimes be hard to get out of. we must take our responsibilities seriously because they affect our future

  4. There are many things that go without saying you must know and remember throughout your whole life. One question that faces yourself is: How am I supposed to learn these "rules" or "ways to live" independently? Laws, regulations, and and simple instructions are things we must come to know. It comes through knowledge of others and mistakes of our own that we learn to accept and remember these rules. These could include things as plain as how to use a microwave or how to do your own laundry going all the way to the more complicated and serious matters of never drink alcohol and drive or never drive without a license. These are just a few of the everyday things we must keep in mind. We need to know how to use a phone incase of an emergency. Doctors need to know how to take care of a patient with a certain area of sickness. School teachers need to know how to teach their students correctly and provide them with the right source of information. For myself I need to know how to brush my teeth, make my bed, cook my breakfast or other meals of the day, and even be able to know where to walk down to my bus stop. We need to be taught or corrected the right way in order to avoid minor or major consequences. All of this is considered common knowledge or things we must known no matter what. If I had no idea that the driving age was 18, I could be arrested for illegal driving without a license and my parents could have charges too. Their is so much responsibility for one person to know. It may seem impossible but its not really. To do so, we must correct our mistakes and learn from the wise.

  5. We need to know lots of things of this nature, but don't realize it because they seem so rudimentary. For example, we need to know that a car doesn't run if it has no gas. We need to know that coming into school dressed in a bikini is not allowed. We need to know that you need to have tooth paste on your brush when you use it. We need to know to depress the clutch before shifting in a car. We need to know how to follow driving rules in general so we don't cause an accident.

  6. As a society, each of us has personal responsibility for knowing a great many things for which we do not have a distinct or defined understanding. In most cases, the absence of such a depth of understanding, however, is not an excuse for ignoring or avoiding personal responsibility. The most basic example of a “thing” that each one of us is responsible for knowing is the difference between “right” and “wrong.” Putting aside laws legislated by man, or handed down from on high, that prohibit certain behavior, each one of us is charged with the responsibility for understanding the difference between the two. Because there is no written set of rules for the two, we are left to rely upon our own moral and ethical compass to provide our own definitions of right and wrong. But, make no mistake, no matter what our individual definitions may be, each one of us remains responsible for always doing, or at least trying to, do the “right” thing. Each day, people faced are faced with situations that require difficult choices. We are expected to know, and are responsible for, the consequences of our actions, and as such remain responsible for making the “right” or “wrong” choice.

  7. everything usually depends on a right on wrong choice. whether you stop at a stop light or go when its green. everyone should know right from wrong even in a plagarism situation. from cheating you get caught, you then learn your lesson, so from then on you make the RIGHT choice and not the WRONG choice. if in the future people all to together cheat then i dont know what the word has come to. everyone makes mistakes. therefore, when people grow old, they should only make the RIGHT choice.
