A dynamic character is one who changes through the course of a story. Often, climaxes (or other important moments) are centered on characters’ transformation. This transformation often happens when the protagonist learns something about a) the world or b) him or herself.
Choose a story (movie, novel, story, poem, play, etc) and demonstrate this fact. Show us how a protagonist changes and what he or she learns about the world or him or herself that affects this change.

A movie that demonstates a dynamic character is the movie "Shrek". At first he wants nothing to do with other people coming to his swamp and bugging him, and always being uptight. But twords the end of the movie, he realizes he shud be more social and relaxed about whats going on around him. He had made some good friends and had an adventures and time with them. He is now a nicer and more carefree person
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jack. Shrek is a good example of character change.
ReplyDeleteYet another good example in a movie, to me, is in Spiderman. This is because at the beginning of the movie Peter Parker Doesn't quite know what to do with his newly found powers. However, by the end of the story he has learned what is right and wrong, and how to use his powers. This was demonstrated throughout the movie and its two following sequels.
(Yes I do understand that is the nerdiest blog post ever...)
A book I read in English last year, To Kill A Mockingbird, showed huge changes throughout the story in many different characters. One of the characters was Jem the older brother of Scout. He changed in this story by as the story went on he became more mature and responsible and didn't participate in some of his childhood games he played with Scout anymore. For example, the Boo Radley game when they would go knock on his door and try and run away as quickly as possible. Instead of taking part in this game he discouraged Scout and her friend Dill from doing that type of stuff. Another example of a character change in this book is Atticus the lawyer who was chosen to defend a black man who was charged with rape. At first Atticus was a little nervous and hesitant about defending him but as the story went on he became more and more determined on not only defending him but winning the case. This showed a giant leap of confidence and mental toughness to be able to defend a black man especially since he was defending him in such a hard time for African-Americans to live in. Both of these examples showed big character changes that influenced the story in their own way.
ReplyDeleteIn the beggining of the movie, "A Walk To Remember," Landon is a selfish teenager who acts cool in front of his friends. Towards the middle of the movie Jamie, a nerd who doesnt care about what people think walks into his life. She changes him, he realizes that he's falling in love with her and he doesnt care about what his friends think about it. By the end of the novel Jamie is diagnosed of Leukemia. He finally realizes how much she changed him, and how pathetic his friends are for making fun of Jamie all the time. Landon shows how much he matures. At the end of this story Landon grows up and gets into medical school. He will never forget about Jamie no matter what.
ReplyDeleteLast year, for summer reading, the entire eighth grade had to read the book, "No Promises in the Wind", by Irene Hunt. It was a story about a family and the hardships they went through during the Great Depression. The main character, Josh, and his brother, Joey, ran away from home because Josh was unhappy by the way his father treated him. I remember our class talked about how Josh grew up throughout the story. This book is a "coming of age" novel, which is when the main characther matures as you read. Because of the struggle, living with no parents, Josh grew up fast. He had to find his own food and get his own job. By the end of the story, Josh realized the way he treated his brother, was just the way his fater had treated him. He understood his father more and decided to find his way back home. The struggles of the Great Depression helped Josh change as a person. I believe Josh would be an example of a dynamic character in "No Promises in the Wind."
ReplyDeleteI feel that a perfect example of a dynamic charcter is Sam in Transformers. In the begining hes the kind of kid who has limited friends and want the girl whos datign the football captain. But as the story goes on he shapes up to be the kind of guy who saves the world, and by the end he is the guy who has the thanks of many, the girl he wants, and the self-confidence to do it all again.
ReplyDeleteAn example of a character that is Dynamic or that changes throughout the story is Scrooge from the classic "A Christmas Charol". In 6th grade I read the play and I've seen the movie many a time. Scrooge began being a greety spoiled man with a lot of money. He was mean to everyone and was haunted by the ghosts of Christman past, future and present. By the end of this story, he realized that Christmas is a time of giving, and he discovered that people were less fortunate than him. In the end, he gave to the needy and became a better person inside.
ReplyDeleteIn the novel, "He's With Me" Lexie is a shy girl who doesn't really talk to anyone else but her twin brother, Colin, and their best friend Jake, who Lexie is in love with. After going to summer camp with Jake and Jake only, Lexie emerges and shows her true self. She isn't as shy, she defeats the meanest girl in the school, Bree, and gains tons of new friends. Lexie is a very good example of a dynamic character because of her huge transformation, her personality had gone from shy, to a girl who wants to be friends with everyone.
