Style/Type Affects Message

We discussed how the style and type of poem affects its meaning. Sonnets are usually about love; limericks are often about humorous subjects. Share what style or type of poetry your song is, and how it affects the song’s central message or theme.

  1. My song is a ballad, so the central theme is clearly depicted throughout the story. In "Cats in the Cradle," by Harry Chapin the story of a father and his son is told. The whole story or song goes through the life of the son and how the dad misses his son grow up, and when the son is all grown up he is exactly like his father. The theme of this ballad is family comes first, and to spend time with people before it is too late to share those same experiences. I feel that the song being a ballad makes the underlining theme stand out much easier than any other song type and style. This is because it is acted out in a story then sung into a song.

  2. My song is a lyrical poem, and the central message is affected. It emphasizes the central message of peace and getting rid of segregation. It helps stress the point that they need to all look past differences and join together as one and let there be love and peace in life. In the song he says he want to tear down the walls, which would be the hate and segregation, and run off to a place where the streets have no name, or where there's no distinction and where there is love.

  3. My song is symbolic poetry, meaning that certain words or phrases are used to represent things beyond their literal meaning. The song has a very dark theme of a man contemplating suicide on a rooftop, and arguably jumping off. Also frequently throughout the song the man prays to God for help through symbolic means. However, this song really has no central message or point that it is attempting to get across. I believe that this song was made simply as a thriller and eventually became much more in depth after the release.

  4. My song is a lyrical poem. With this, my song has a very simple ryhme scheme, ABAB, but it is constant throughout the whole song. Through the ryhming, my song is able to display its central message, which is the literal meaning of the song as well, very easily. The artist of my song, Lupe Fiasco, is commonly known for doing that. Instead of trying to make his audience think about his song after it is completed, he displays his message throughout every line of his songs so that his listeners can follow along the picture he paints easily.

  5. My song is a lyrical poem. It focuses on a girl, or really anyone, who is going through a rough time who feels like he/she has no where to turn to. It has a basic rhyme scheme. It's a song about hope and finding your place, being able to turn to someone in life.

  6. My song is very calm, welcoming and inviting. Not just by the lyrics of the song, but the music. The tone or the style of the song has a major influence on the central theme of the song. Throughout the poem he is inviting the reader on a journey and to entise you to go with him, he gives a calm and welcoming mood.

  7. my song is a very heavy song, its about writers block and how the character of the song is trying to get the ideas out of his head. The tone helps getting the idea of "get out!" to be noticed. when the singer yells get out, he is telling the ideas in his head to get out.
