Book Recommendations

Please recommend a book for someone to read for the independent work. Don’t give the book away, but try to interest the reader by introducing what the book is about.

  1. I would suggest reading "Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. I read this book in middle school and thoroughly enjoyed it. The book is about a young boy who befriends the son of his father's servant. The book starts out as a tale of these two adventures, but through the nature of living in the district of Kabul, the plot line drastically changes. The book highlights many events from the fall of monarchy through the Soviet invasion, and even the Taliban. It was a great book and I strongly suggest it to anyone.

  3. I would suggest reading "To Kill A Mockingbird" if one hasn't read it yet in middle school. This book teaches a lot about life and the characters in this novel change throughout the book. It teaches a lot about growing up and what's truly important in life, and it shows to never listen to rumors which is something someone in high school could really get a lot out of. If you haven't read this book yet, it'd be a good idea to read it. It has a lot of meaning and is award winning and it really changes your output on life and people in general.

  4. I would recommend this book for just about anyone that is into a mysterious books. The trilogy, Island is one of my personal all time favorites because it is very interesting. The trilogy starts with the book Shipwreck. Shipwreck introduces the six children that are forced to be sent away on a boat to improve there behavior. When they run into a storm they become shipwreck and all reunite on this strange island where they are forced to fend for themselves with no civilization or help anywhere near them. The second book is called Survival. In this book it goes into more depth of how the children figure out ways to remain calm on the island they are stranded on. The third book is called Escape. It would be a good idea to read this book because it can make you imagine many things when reading it. I read this book in middle school and really enjoyed it.

  5. I would recommend the book "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd to pretty much everyone. It's about a girl, Lily, who's father is cruel and her mother died in a blur when she was young. She has had a black maid named Rosaleen take care of her since her mother passed away, but living in the South, there are many racist men in her town. Lily hates the way the men treat her motherly figure and in a small box of possessions that used to bee her mother's she found a town name. She takes Rosaleen on a journey to this town to attempt to find out more about her mother. This book is exciting and shows how powerful women can be.

  6. I would recommend "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan to any gender any age really. This series of Percy Jackson the Olympians is probably the best series of books i've ever read in my life. This is a fantasy series about a young boy who discovers he's a demigod and has to go to Camp Half Blood for protection. Things aren't always right with the Gods such as Zeus Poseidon and Hades. In this book Zeus' thunder bolt was stolen and Percy has to go on a quest along with his pals Annabeth and Grover to return this to him before there's a huge clash between the Gods at Mount Olympus. Percy has to fight through minotaurs and pleny other of suprises. This is the first the other thrillers fromthe rest of the four books. I wasn't even a fantasy fan, and the books just got better and better.

  7. I would reccomend the book Heat by Mike Lupica. Heat is a book about a boy in the South Bronx that plays baseball and whos dream is to make it to the state championship and play in Yankee Stadium. This book is for anyone who likes sports books that have a story to them. This book shows what it means to set goals and stick to them and it also shows how difficult city life can be sometimes and how it affects the main character.

  8. I would have to recommend the book "The Boy in Striped Pajamas" by John Boyne. It's a great book that is told from a nine year old boy's point of view. This boy, Bruno, is the son of a Nazi leader who is forced to move to Poland by his father's orders, but he has no idea why. I really liked this book because most Holocaust books are from the Jewish perspective, when this one is not. That's about all I can say without giving too much information away, but I believe Boyne was trying to show how horrible the Holocaust was and how terribe the Nazis were. Bruno, a nine year old child, could witness himself the crulity and was questioning why this was happening in the first place. If a child like Bruno thinks it's wrong, Boyne is trying to say he wonders why the Nazis themselves didn't stop to realize what they were doing. I would strongly suggest this book because its only about 200 pages and is also a very powerful story as well.

  9. I would recommend the book I read for this project called “Joker One” by Donovan Campbell. Donovan Campbell was a platoon leader for Golf Company. His forty-man infantry platoon was called Joker One. For over half a year this group faced intense combat and long hours of hard work, little sanitation, no running water or clean clothes. They were trying to provide security to the civilians and keep the insurgents from taking over the city. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat and is very well written. It gives detailed accounts of the actions going on over in Iraq through the eyes of a marine. This book is not that long and very eye opening I definitely recommend it.

  11. One decent book I would recommend to the class is "The Thief Lord." It's a very good and fulfilling book about homeless children living in Venice, Italy. The interesting part is that they have a somewhat older child, known as The Thief Lord, who goes out and steals valuable things for them to sell and survive on. As the plot unfolds, things become apparent that never seem plausible in this type of story such as the fountain of youth, and other concepts. It is a very good read but probably needs to be read through more than one to be completely grasped.
