Practical Self-Help

This week, you wrote a reflection on your strengths and weaknesses in terms of writing. In this post, explore one practical step you could take to help improve one of your weaknesses.

  1. My main strength when writing is my ideas. Usually when I like the topic I am writing about, I have a lot of great ideas. My problem is putting them into words and into correct sentences. One way that I am trying to improve my weakness by making an outline. When I wrote my essay on "Othello" it really helped. As i was writing the outline it helped me get my thoughts organized on paper. When it came time to write the essay, I had what i wanted to say and when i wanted to say it. Whenever i have to write an essay, i will spending the time to prepare an outline.

  2. I am stronger in the creative side of writing. I am better at creative writing than I am at analytical writing. For example, I can enjoy writing about my own experiences or making things up. On the other hand, I find it more difficult to write research papers or an analysis on something I have read. With creative pieces, my writing seems to flow naturally. With research papers, my writing is choppy and does not flow. Overall, I think my strength in my writing is creative pieces.

  3. well, my strength in writing is the i can come up with very good topics for essays. my weakness if spelling and grammar. i am very bad on more of in-class essays. i am very bad with there, their and they're, and were where wear. i also can not spell words correctly. i usually try to sound words out but i do not come close half the time. i can improve this by practicing them and when i see a word go over it until i know how to spell it.

  4. Usually when I write essays or stories they are all within my comfort zone of writing, but that is one of my weaknesses that I don't leave my comfort zone in writing I usually write in the same format I have already written in. A way I can improve this is by writing essays not just based off one argument , but maybe write an essay with a few arguments rather than the simple one argument. Another way I can improve my writing is to take more risks, maybe relate the argument to a story I have already read or one of my other experiences that relates to my argument. One of my other big strengths is that I can create a well developed argument, but one of my weaknesses is backing the argument up with factual evidence and proving the argument. I can improve this by rereading sections of the book I am arguing about and take important quotes from sections of the book that back up my argument. If I work on all my weaknesses I feel that I will become a much better writer.

  5. My strength in writing is definitely developing a good argument and proving my point in the body paragraphs. The thing i sometimes get messed up with is making a strong argument in my thesis. I can support my idea, but sometimes my thesis needs to be stronger and straight forward. The thesis is so important and I should work harder on developing a good one. Mine are sometimes weak and have confusing parts to them. Another thing that I could improve on is stronger conclusions. I do not know how to wrap it up. I feel like i used up all my ideas earlier and have nothing to say. I hope to work on this by the end of year along with making a stronger thesis. I also hope to be able to interconnect my quotes with my paragraphs. I feel like quotes really help support me and back me up, i just wish I could like write them into my writing instead of just stating them.

  6. I have my strengths and weaknesses in writing. My strengths are that i can come up with a good thesis statement or argument. I can usually construct a pretty solid argument trying to prove something. My weaknesses are that I can easily be distracted and I usually procrastinate. Also, sometimes I can trail away from my thesis but I have gotten better with that. When I focus, I can get the work done quick and efficient, so I need to work on not being distracted by other things like facebook, television, ipod, etc. I think for the procrastination issue, I need to plan ahead and maybe do sections at a time and write maybe an outline earlier. This way I won't be scrambling to get it done at the last minute.

  7. Like anyone else, i have strengths and weaknesses in my writing. One of my strengths is I excel when it comes to creative writing. I feel there is not a specific point I have to prove or a certain topic I must focus on. I enjoy coming up with plot lines or creating stories from my imagination, not proving something that happened in a book. One of my weaknesses is that i tend to use many run on sentences throughout my writing. And for the most part when i read over the story myself, I still don't catch my mistakes. The step I'm trying to take is reaching out to others and have them read my writing. I don't let them change what I have written, but just to edit the run-ons and other grammatical issues I may have. And by seeing what they have noted to be a run on makes me see them when I'm reviewing my own writing and be able to learn to fix them on my own.

  8. One of my main weaknesses is that i begin to lose my train of thought and i ramble on about the same thing. I begin to repeat myself over and over and it will start to lose the audiences attention. Also to add to the repetitiveness i began to have run-on sentences. To help steer away from these flaws i can start pre planning for each paragraph so i have a new topic to clearly discuss. I can also make sure i revise my paper enough and even get a friend or family member to check for any repetitiveness or run-on sentences. It shouldn't be too hard to stay away from my weakness as long as i plan ahead and focus on the topic well enough.

  9. One weakness that I have in my writing is that I get distracted so easily. Whenever I write I cannot write down everything thats on my mind because I cant rememeber It after a few minutes. People distract me a lot In my writing. I cannot sit down and write an essay by myself, without my phone, or without being on social internet sites. I think I can prevent this If I have a piece of paper next to me so I can jot down everything thats on my mind. I can also prevent this by closing the internet on my computer, putting my phone away, and stop procastinating.

  10. To improve my essays, one practical step would be to brainstorm and outline my ideas before I begin to write. I always am focussed on finishing the essay in the time given to me. When I get to the first paragraph the ideas are totally sparatic and all over the place. It would help if I made a final decision on my ideas and outlined the essay. This would allow my thesis to become better and further related to the essay even more.

  11. I end up leaving a lot of contractions and personals and such in my essays. I think if I reread every paragraph after I was done, and after I wrote another paragraph, reading the whole thing through, would really help me be able to find all of the mistakes I made so I could get a better grade. I also summarize a lot, so I can find someone who hasn't read the book and ask them if I summarize it too much.

  12. I know one of my major weaknesses is misspellings and lack of vocab. I think though, if I read more and more i can fix this problem quickly. Also the more I write and see the words in terms of spelling and meaning the better I'll become. Another weakness I have is to jump right into writing a paper without any prewrite and end up running out of ideas half way through. This is also a quick fix. I'll I have to do is slow down and take 5 minutes to plan.

  13. A weakness of my wrting, which is commented on every formal assignment we do for class, is making a strong thesis out of my three ideas. Getting those three ideas for my three main body paragraphs are a breeze, what gives me the problem is taking those ideas and turning them into a strong and persuasive thesis. You say to explore a way to improve this flaw, but I don't know how to. I don't know how to make myself a "better thesis writer", which isn't very good.
