Dramatic Irony

Dramatic Irony is the effect of having the audience (or reader) know something people on stage (or in the story) do not know. Explore either a) the effect dramatic irony has on story-telling, or b) an example of this in a movie, play, or story.

  1. Dramatic Irony is a very effective way of keeping an audience intersested in the storyline. In the play Othello written by Shakespeare Dramatic irony is a big part of the play. It is used in the story by having the audience know the character Iago is a villain but other characters in the story don't know this. This affects the story because it keeps the audience on the edge of their seats wanting to know what Iago will do next. Also since none of the other characters know about Iago being a villain he has the ability to go about as a normal person and pick and choose where he wants to inflict his damage.

  2. I agree with Ryan that dramatic irony is a big part of the play. In several parts of the play Iago addresses the audience letting the audience in on his scheme while the rest of the characters remain clueless. For example, in Act II, scene I, when Cassio innocently takes Desdemona's hand, Iago addresses the audience with his plan to frame Cassio. He says, "With as little a web as this I will ensnare as great a fly as Cassio." (36) From this point on, the story became more interesting because it kept me wondering if Iago could pull off such a plan.

  4. a)Dramatic irony keeps you well interested in the storyline. It keeps the story or play overall interesting like ryan mentioned. When crazy things happen, you want to know what is going to happen next. When a twist is put into the story, especially through irony, readers like it more because it simply mixes up the story in unexpected ways. Many problems form through irony as well, in my opinion. Like in Othello, it is beginning with Iago who is not what he seems which is mentioned above. Many stories, movies and/or books have problems begin through irony. Although irony may become confusing with in the text, it is an important part of literature which always makes you wonder and can form a great story.

  5. Dramatic irony is said to create suspense and dramatic effect even though the audience already knows the truth. For example, in the movie “Titanic” , the audience is aware before the movie starts that the ship will sink. In one scene, the characters remarked that the ship was “unsinkable.” The audience will understand the irony while the characters are oblivious. The audience of the movie know that the people in the ship should be preparing to evacuate not partying. The audience knows that the characters are ignorant that most of them will soon die. I felt anxious and scared watching the movie knowing the end was coming for characters that I didn’t want to die.

  6. An example of the opposite of dramtic irony is the movie Ocean’s Twelve where the characters know what’s going on the whole time while the audience is unaware. So an example of dramatic irony is the movie “The Truman Show” starring Jim Carrey. The irony in it is that he is living in this fake world completely isolated from the rest of the world and every other character including the audience knows, but he doesn’t.

  8. A great example of Dramatic Irony in this story is when one of the characters talks to us in a few lines, explaining how he feels or whats happening in the play. At one point in the play Iago is being two faced on stage. That is when Dramatic Irony is involved because the people in the play do not know whats really happening in the story, but the audience does. There were many other examples of Dramatic Irony in this play, but i felt this one was the most important so far. Dramatic Irony is somewhat fun, and it makes the play keep on going. Dramatic Irony is a very easy effective way to make your play or story enthusiastic.

  9. Dramatic irony is used in story telling to add a new level of story telling. In Shakespeare's play he sometimes puts characters away from the rest to talk to the audience, they shares his/ her feelings or thoughts, but the other charters don't know what he said it is like the audience is in the characters head. This is done so Shakespeare can show the audience the reactions or thoughts that some characters might be going through. Something that is ironic in "Othello" is that Rodrigo trusts Iago so much but Iago is actually not who he says to be.

  10. The effect that using dramatic irony has on story telling is that it makes the reader interact with the characters. You always hear people say something like "No! Don't go in there its a trap!" when they are watching a movie they have seen before. It's the same with dramatic irony in story telling. In the case of Othello, it makes the story more amusing to the reader.
It is funny to see the characters in the play running around, killing each other and doing other stupid things to try to fix a problem that didn't even exist in the first place.
