All students are required to comment once a week. A week goes from Monday to Sunday. A comment can be a response to my or others' posts --- or a new post. All posts must be relevant to class discussions and assignments. Each post should be 1-3 paragraphs. Remember, it is OK to disagree with one another, but we must always be RESPECTFUL of one another.
I feel a specific theme emphasized in this story is racism. The whole book, the black family is trying to make ends meet while Walter works for a white family and tells his son about how great their life is. Even when they are moved into the neighborhood, they are told that they couldn't move there in order to keep the peace. Another line that Mama talks about is how she used to worry about staying alive and not about money or where it is coming from. This story is driven by the burning racial hate between the blacks and the whites.
ReplyDeleteIn the play A Raisin in the Sun, I feel the main theme is dreams. I believe there is many themes in this story, but one that really makes you think is dreams. I know we have talked a lot about it in class, but I see why; It connects with every other problem within the story. Everyone in the Younger family has their own dreams, and if they do not fulfill them, they will be unhappy. This connects to money because they do not have enough money to make everyone happy in the house. When the 10,000 came in, Mama used it to make a down payment for a house while Walter became upset to not use it all in his liquor store. He definitely has some anger problems so it is an issue within the family relationships. Making everyone happy is giving them their dreams and sometimes it just cant be done. I believe this makes the family begin to fall apart. Maybe Mama's dream will make everyone happy and more together.
ReplyDeleteIn the play "Raisin in the Sun", an important specific theme would be Walter's dreams. When the check comes and his mom won't give any to him, his actions impact the whole family. He starts to excessively drink, not go to work, and mope around the house. To me Walter seems to be acting as if he is a young child that was just denied a toy by his parents. The child's reaction is to just act depressed and make his parents feel bad so they get him the toy. Walter did the same thing to his mother and it worked. Mama finally gave in to the foolish act and gave Walter what he wanted.
ReplyDeleteIn the book Raisin in the Sun, i feel the main complex theme is dreams. Everyone in that house has some sort of dreams. First, Walter's dreams is to open his liquor store. However, mama won't let him. In Ruth's dreams she wants to buy a nice house with a back yard and a nice room for her child Travis. Mama's dreams are too have everyone be happy and also have a house for her and her family. Bethany also has dreams, her dreams are too go to school to become a doctor. As far as Travis goes, he doesn't really care for dreams. He has two loving parents that care for him. And if their dreams come true then he will be happy.
ReplyDeleteIn the book, "A Raisin in the Sun", a sepcific theme is racism. I completely agree with Matt. The family has bought a very nice house that their father has worked a lot for. When they recieved that check, they all wanted to do their own things with the money, but Mama decided to buy a house. That extremely nice house was in a white neigborhood, and the people of that specific community did not want them their just because of their skin color. I personally think that it's redicioulous how people can just think they can give people money to move out of a house just because they don't share a "common backround"."
ReplyDeleteThroughout the story I see a theme of assimilation. You can tell that Mama and Walter have dreams to live nicely and lavishly like the typical White family of that time. Mama buys a house in a white neighborhood and Walter dreams of opening a liquor store and go into business. He says at one point that he saw young white people making deals for millions of dollars and he wishes he could do that too. Both of them want to have nice lives and are doing it by taking on the identity of a white family. Benetha doesn't totally give into assimilation and is proud of her cultural heritage which i think that Asaigi pushes. He makes her want to represent her culture and not blend in with the white people. When getting closer with Asaigi you see the change of how she represent her culture more and more, you see her cut her hair so it's not relaxed and is now curly and natural. You also see her dancing to music from Africa. Signs like this are present throughout the play.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the main theme in the Raisin in the Sun is to convey the heritage of black families during the period of segregation in the United States. This history, represented by the Younger family in this play, is a story of continuous struggles and challenges. The family, like many black families, had roots in the South, but they moved north seeking a better life. Now living in Chicago, the family members have low-skilled, low paying jobs. Neither Walter nor Ruth attended college. Walter is a chauffeur and Ruth cleans houses, occupations common to blacks in the 1950’s. Like many other black families living in cities, they cannot save enough to buy a home and they must pay rent to live a small run-down apartment. Through the dialogue we learn that the family dreams of improving their lifestyle. We learn that some understand the path to improving their situation is education. Beneatha dreams of attending medical school, but she could not afford it. The insurance money provided an opportunity, but sadly, the family did not get the full benefit of this good fortune. The end of the story emphasizes the theme of black cultural struggles when the Younger’s face racism when trying to the buy their first house. This was another common event during the period of segregation in the United States.
ReplyDeleteA specific theme that I found at the end of the play was pride. Walter finally becomes a man at the end by having pride in him and his family. Lindner offers Waalter and his family a deal to buy the house back from them for a more amount of money then they got it for. Walter got the message that they didn't want colored people in their neighborhood, but he didn't want to be treated like that. He denied the offer to have his own self respect and have pride in his family not to be discriminated against just because the color of their skin. Walter learns to be the man of the house just like his father was.
ReplyDeleteIn "Raisin in the Sun," I thought the main theme was dreams. Before the play began we read a short poem about dreams about what happens when they are not completed or if they are completed. The specific theme is that dreams will change your life, this is because if Mama didn't have the dream to buy a new house the family would be miserable still living in their old house. Travis would be sleeping on the couch, Mama and Beneatha would be sharing a bed, and the only window would be in the kitchen. The main theme is dreams because in the story every character has a dream, and if they are not fulfilled or if they are fulfilled. For instance Walter had a dream to own a liquor store, but Mama had a dream to buy a house with a garden, but since Mama wouldn't give Walter the money to start the liquor store he saw what Mama was seeing and then had the same dream as Mama. That is why the main theme of this story is dreams.
ReplyDeleteA specific theme that I found in the play was money. Money is a huge deal to this family because Walter does not have a "real job" as he says in the book and story. He feels as he is a showfer for people because he is a taxi driver. Money also means a lot to the Hansberry's because without money they would not be where they are right now. They need money to survive and take care of their children and family. Throughout the whole play Walter wanted to work at a liquor store. He wanted this so he could take care of his family members. Every event that happened in the story had to do with money. Money is the specific theme that I have found in this play.
ReplyDeleteI feel that family is a main theme in A Raisin In The Sun. To me, Mama really keeps the family together and really focuses on keeping everyone happy. She goes out of her way and does things with her own money just to keep them happy and only with them in mind. Hansberry really emphasizes the fact that you need to stick with your family no matter what happens in life because your family will always stick with you no matter how bad something you do is.
