  1. I am going to answer number two. I think that repression helps some people get through a hard time. But I also don't think that it would be smart to repress things. Like in what edgar allen poe wrote. How he blocked it out and never told it to anyone for 50 years. One reason I think it was wrong is because you shouldn't just forget the things you do bad,you should try to understand the problem and fix for the next time you screw up. Last thing, if you forget about something and don't remember it then how will you remember that it was wrong or right or whether not to do it again. So yea it may make you feel better but don't do it because it can lead you to make the same situation or a worse one.

  2. In responce to question two, I think that repression has a bad effect on people. Remembering things that you neccassarily don't want to remember, and keeping them bottled up is never a good thing. I agree with Jacob, it is very similar to Edgar Allen Poe's story. Repression may make you feel better, remembering the memories of perhaps a certain loved one or something or other, but it's never a good thing. It only makes the situation worse, because you're filled with repressed energy that does need to be let out at some point. Not in 50 years.

  3. Generally speaking people repress things that they feel are difficult to talk about openly, or that will dredge up bad memories. We are hesitant to reveal our inner most ideas, thoughts and feelings for fear of being rejected or ridiculed by others. We are can’t bear to relive events that caused us to endure physical or emotional pain like a car accident or death of a loved one. Often feelings of inadequacy, insecurity, loneliness, anger, and even love, are kept hidden away because we are worried that these very human emotions, if disclosed, would be viewed as demonstrating weakness. On whole, it is easier to “repress” such feelings and emotions in the hope that they will simply “go away” rather than taking risk of bearing your soul to the world.

  4. In response to part B

I feel that in most people's lives, including my own, we all repress memories that we hope someday never come back. I honestly don't think that repression is a good thing because of the simple reason that the memory never fades, and it can come back to haunt you. In some cases repression, when it comes back, is usually referred to as "dealing with your demons" of something like that. I believe that that is exactly what it is because if you did or had something happen to you that truly was absolutely terrible, I'm pretty sure that the memory doesn;t go away and it never really will. The only real way to deal with such memories is by getting them "out of your system". For many people they just need someone to talk to about it, which usually helps because we all feel that we need help from others at times in our life. However, some people like to get it out in other forms such as through literature, poems, music, or simply taking their anger out by doing something physical like football or working out. In many ways repression can be fixed however in the end it only makes us stronger and better people if you deal with it the right way.

    Thank you
